Welcome to Salzburg's smallest boutique hotel
from pleasure to seduction
Built in the 15th century, the three-storey La Maison was once a craftsman’s house.
In the 17th century, trades that depended on water – such as potters, dyers, and tanners – were primarily settled along Steingasse. Until the regulation of the Salzach River in 1862, almost every one of the impressive houses had direct access to the river at the back, along with magnificent gardens.
From white leather tanners to saddlers and comb makers – they all lived and worked in La Maison over the years, shaping its rooms with their craft, their passion, and their character.
But as time passed, the building became something you would not find on every city map – a house of pleasures, a place of curiosity, sensuality, and quiet rebellion against bourgeois restraint.
Today, this spirit still lingers – subtle, stylish, and newly reinterpreted.
Here, in what was once the Maison de Plaisir, Salzburg once sought what elsewhere was spoken only in whispers: closeness, seduction, pleasure. Together with the second house of pleasure in Herrengasse, it wrote a chapter of the city’s history that was just as vibrant as the music echoing through Mozart’s streets.
It is said that even Mozart himself came and went here.
Behind closed doors, stories were whispered that would never appear in books – stories of longing, intimacy, and the art of savoring the moment. Even today, the building carries the magic of secrecy, as if a kaleidoscope of past nights, voices, and stories still glimmers behind its old walls.
A scratch in the wall of Steingasse, next to what is now the theatre house “Das Kino”, tells a story of its own:
According to legend, shortly after the war, an American tank got stuck in the narrow Steingasse – on its way to the Maison de Plaisir.
The soldiers, it seems, were in quite a hurry to carry out their own very special post-war mission.
The tank was stuck, the city was talking – and the house became a legend forever.
Today, the building is protected as a historic monument – a silent witness to an era when pleasure, life, and passion still walked hand in hand.
With Hotel La Maison, a place was created where history does not gather dust in a museum, but continues to breathe within every wall.
La Maison is not a copy of the past, but its most elegant continuation.
A hotel with character, charm — and a smile behind the curtain.
Every detail in La Maison is a tribute to the history of the house:
the patina of the old walls, the soft light falling through the historic windows, the subtle hints of its mischievous past combined with timeless luxury.
Here, French elegance meets the soul of Salzburg.
A place for people who seek more than just a night’s stay – for those who want to feel what it means to experience history.
La Maison is not simply a hotel.
It is a statement – for character, for history, and for the art of allowing oneself to be seduced.
And it pays a compliment to all those who understand the fine difference between luxury and passion.
